Study Guide: Differentiated Instruction & UDL
Differentiated Instruction (DI)
Teachers adapt instruction based on student strengths, interests, learning styles, and readiness. A core strategy is flexible groupings — groups that change based on student needs (never permanent ability groups).
DI is NOT: giving everyone different worksheets, identical instruction for all, or fixed long-term groups.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
One phrase: "Necessary for some, good for all." Design learning that removes barriers for students who need support, and it ends up helping everyone.
UDL is NOT: one-size-fits-most, unique lessons for each student, or a fixed grouping strategy.
How They Work Together
DI + UDL enable teachers to respond effectively to the strengths and needs of ALL students. Their shared goal: meeting the different needs of students in a class.
Project-Based Approach
A strategy that supports both DI and UDL. It provides a variety of learning opportunities focused on a topic or theme, letting students work at their own pace.
