Study Guide: Accommodations & Modifications

The Key Distinction

Accommodations = change HOW the student learns or demonstrates learning. The curriculum expectations STAY THE SAME.

Modifications = change WHAT the student is expected to learn. The curriculum expectations CHANGE.

Accommodation Examples

Extra time on tests, taking a written test orally, visual supports, alternative setting (quieter room), assistive technology. None of these change what the student learns.

Modification Examples

Using expectations from a different grade level, decreasing complexity of expectations, decreasing the number of expectations assessed. These change the actual learning expectations.

Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

Both accommodations and modifications are documented in the student's IEP. Not an "Annual Learning Plan" or "Achievement Plan" — only the IEP.

Alternative Programs

Programs not in the provincial curriculum: social skills, speech remediation, mobility training. Co-operative education is NOT alternative — it IS part of the curriculum.

Special Education Assessment

Assessment supports program decisions, determines interventions, and supports referrals and planning. It is NEVER for sorting or grouping students.
